This Web page is about the ancient city of Aptera in Crete, which stood on the site of modern-day Paleokastro (or Palaikastro). Aptera (also referred to as Aptara, Apteria, Apterea or Aptaria) was once an important city in Crete, equal, if not greater than Knossos and Festos in stature. However, a large proportion of the city still needs to be excavated. The website provides a history of the city from the Minoan to the Byzantine periods and includes details of excavations that have been carried out.
